Looking for More on Fuel Cells in Data Centers? Here’s Where to Find It.

Information specific to the application of fuel cells in data centers can be difficult to find. There is no shortage of general information on how fuel cells have the potential to enable data center operators to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by transforming renewable energy into continuous, clean data center power. But there is little to help you separate hype from reality.

At Vertiv, we’ve set out to change that. We’re working closely with multiple fuel cell manufacturers to ensure fuel cells can meet data center power requirements and are involved in projects using both PEM and solid oxide fuel cells in data center applications. We’re also committed to providing up-to-date information on this rapidly evolving technology to our customers and other interested parties. To that end, we’ve made available the following resources:

  • New white paper: Evaluating the Potential of Fuel Cells for Backup and Primary Data Center Power. This paper takes an in-depth look at the trends driving interest in fuel cells, evaluates the performance characteristics of solid oxide and PEM fuel cells in light of data center requirements, and shows how data center fuel cell solutions can be designed to manage electrical transients from fuel cells using data center infrastructure. This article is authored by Arturo Di Filippi, who manages Vertiv’s Smart Power offering globally and has been actively involved in fuel cell development projects. It focuses on the hurdles that must be overcome to achieve commercial fuel cell solutions for the data center and the progress that is being made in overcoming those hurdles.
  • On -demand webinar: How Will the E2P2 Hydrogen Project Enable Europe's Climate Neutral Data Center Goals by 2030? This webinar features a panel discussion with participants from Vertiv, Equinix and InfraPrime and focuses on the EcoEdge PrimePower (E2P2) fuel cell project.
