Need More Computing Capacity Now? Try a Prefabricated Modular Data Center.

451 Research Report Highlights a Vertiv SmartMod™ and Power Module Update that Addresses Customers’ Capacity and Deployment Challenges

The continuous pressure for more computing capacity that can be rapidly deployed, especially at the network edge, is creating a time of unprecedented digital transformation for Vertiv customers.

Pre-fabricated modular (PFM) data centers and power rooms address this need, and as a result, are fueling one of the most rapidly growing markets in data center infrastructure. 451 Research predicts that growth in the pre-fabricated market will be strong over the next two years, reaching revenues of $4 billion in 2020.

What is behind this shift in the data center infrastructure landscape?

While some application workloads are transitioning to the cloud or colocation facilities, many businesses prefer to retain some data on premise due to security or low-latency requirements.

However, as density increases, those existing on-premise applications begin to approach computing capacity. PFM systems offer a quick option for augmenting capacity in a smaller footprint. They exemplify the industry’s macro shift away from the complexity of disparate equipment and components to simpler solutions developed from more standard building blocks.

How do Vertiv’s modular data center solutions address these needs?

For facilities in need of a PFM data center for “drop-in” or turn-key deployment that supports rapid scalability, the Vertiv SmartMod and Power Module deliver. Part of a standardized portfolio, Vertiv SmartMod solutions allow potential customers to choose from a set of easy-to-understand product configurations for which they receive quick price quotes and estimated delivery times. Vertiv Power Module comes in two major versions and streamlines data center construction or refurbishment projects without a complete overhaul to existing design and build practices.

For example, Vertiv recently deployed 11 power rooms within six months and on budget for a service provider needing to quickly scale transport capacity in a carrier-neutral dark fiber site. In another scenario, Vertiv delivered and secured permit approval for modular data center infrastructure requiring adherence to Canadian building codes and seismic requirements for a telecom facility. The time span from the initial order to startup was 24 weeks.

In another example, Vertiv had to consider a casino’s elevated sensitivity to deployment speed and consistent performance. Fortunately, the simplified ordering process for the SmartMod systems allowed us to quickly expand gaming power without touching the existing data center white space.

The Vertiv SmartMod line targets smaller capacity requirements. Each module contains all necessary and forward-looking components, such as remote management, yet can still be adjusted for customer requirements. Each module can be configured to contain 2 to 12 racks and up to 90kW of load for one enclosure or 180kW for two conjoined enclosures.

Vertiv Power Modules scale in 120 or 200kw increments up to 600kw in a single system enclosure and can be scaled up with additional modules. All Power Modules have their own cooling, fire suppression, switchboard, and can house enough batteries to hold the full load for up to five minutes. The monolithic 1000 or 1200kW version, built around the industry-leading Liebert EXL S1 UPS system, offers a power dense critical power package for building out larger sites.

The refreshed Vertiv SmartMod and Power Module lines are immediately available in Europe, Middle East and Africa and will be available in North America early this year.
